A Step-by-Step Guide for Any Configuration

This is the phase where most homeowners get stuck, and it is almost always because they are trying to lift the backrest before releasing the internal lock. The seat back on a modular recliner does not simply pull upward; it locks firmly into the frame rail at two distinct points.

Step 1: Open the Rear Access Flap

Stand behind the sofa. Look at the lower edge of the seat back where it meets the main base frame. On most premium upholstered sofas, the rear fabric panel is a loose flap held shut with a strong hook-and-loop (velcro) fastener strip. Peel this back gently and fold it upward to expose the interior metal skeleton and brackets.

Step 2: Locate and Release the Locking Levers

Once the flap is open, look at the outer left and outer right edges of the seat frame channel. You will see a heavy-duty steel slide bracket on each side. On the bracket, there will be a small metal tab or lever.

Trying to shift an entire assembled corner sectional as a single unit puts immense stress on the frame links and can easily warp the internal mechanics.
